Liverpool fans cant shut up

Congratulations to the Liverpool fans who yesterday couldn't keep their mouths shut for 20 seconds never mind for a whole minute. The referee in the Manchester City-Liverpool match was forced to end the minute silence in honor of George Best after 20 seconds because the fans couldn't shut up.

they were less than impressive during the minute silence for George Best, which referee Alan Wiley cut down to barely 20 seconds to ensure audible murmurings from the visiting section did not turn into something more embarrassing.

I was listening to the match on the radio and as I heard the "murmurings" I was shocked and ashamed to be a Liverpool fan. To me it didn't sound like murmurings, it sounded more like booing. I hope the scum responsible are proud of themselves and I hope they all ended up stuck in one of the weekends freak snow drifts and froze on the journey home. May they never have a player like George Best in their team to cheer.

Update: Ok, I feel I should clarify, my posting came across as a little sweeping in its condemnation of Liverpool fans. I am one myself. It was a minority of fans who disrespected the minutes silence. Unfortunately it is far too easy for a small section of fans to spoil something like a minutes silence. The minutes applause done at other games far more appropriate both for the environment of a stadium. I also shouldn't condemn the team to never have a player like Best. Perhaps I should say May they have switched their fickle allegiances to Everton before Liverpool have a player like George Best.

Dec, that football365 report seems to be the only one saying that. I watched the game on Sky on Sat. night and didn't notice any booing. Did you hear it yourself?

It's important not to tarnish all supporters with the same brush.

Yeah I heard it myself. It was on the Today FM coverage. The commentators mentioned it and then came up with two excuses first they said it may have been fans still comeing into the stand who didnt know the minutes silence was on and then within a minute they had the official excuse, apparently it was TV monitors around the stand that was playing another match where the crowd was booing. How many premiership matches show other matches on TVs around the ground when their match is kicking off??? It was quite loud and obviously in the stadium not broadcast in from else where.

Anonymous, I am disgusted at the bad attitude shown by fans from all teams but it is because I am a Liverpool fan that I was shocked and ashamed of what other Liverpool fans did. I dont care what United fans do. Should we all lower ourselves to the lowest common denominator and become United fans? Though from your post, I see you are already quite familar with the lowest common denominator.

Couldn't agree more, I think all soccer supporters are scum merchants! George Best is a god. The way he managed to snag himself a new lung after single-mindedly managing to fuck his own one up ahead of all those other suckers that you know, deserved one, and then continued to make shit out of the new one up is an inspiration to all us freedom-loving capitalists. Walk on George, I wish we could of given you another.

And by the way he was bankrupt so he didnt buy his liver, it was an act of charity by the hospital and surgeon.

I'm not saying it didn't happen but until I see and hear it myself I'm a bit surprised. Do you think that the Man. City. fans could have been doing this? There was 47,000 at the match on Sat. and 3,000 of these were in the away section. The away section is separated by a couple of rows of seats form the home supporters. So just because the noise was coming from one end of the ground does not mean it was coming from the away section.

Rafael Benitez has said it was "some liverpool fans", http://uk.sports.yahoo.com/051126/1/f5ok.html

Every thing I've read seems to be blaming the Liverpool fans, though then the City fans jeered the Liverpool fans behaviour so that probably escalated the situation. As I said it was a minority.

It is possible the Liverpool contingent jeered the City crowd?

"I also thought it was scandalous how the City fans booed on Saturday and turned a 1 minute’s silence into just 15 seconds."

I don't really care who is to blame, they are worthless anyway, I just wanted to make a point.

It is possible. City officials were quick to blame TV's I guess they could have been equally quick to spread the word that it was the Liverpool fans. I did read one posting where a Liverpool fan claimed to be one of the people who started it http://icliverpool.icnetwork.co.uk/0500liverpoolfc/messageboard/
" We hate Mark Lawrenson 02:36:43 PM 28 November 2005
You guys. I was at the city game, the booing started by a couple of regulars who, like me, (having met them in numerous pubs prior to away games) were at Hillsborough. We distinctly remember the jeers that came from the united fans (at our minutes silence) after 96 of us died in front of our own eyes. Now that is hard to forgive. Yes i agree that one must show respect but is one mans life greater than the 96 who died so tragically (inc women and children or that of a self distructive alcoholic). We do hope that George Best DOES rest in peace, but the jeers were genuinley directed at the united fans. May the 96 (first) and George Best rest in peace."

However at this stage I feel that I am coming across very anti-liverpool which I dont want to. I would not be at all surprised to hear that there were just as many or more Man City fans booing Best for playing for United as there were Liverpool fans booing as revenge against the United fans and because it was a home game for them City were able to tell the journalists is was all Liverpool fans to blame. They do say City fans jeered, but they were jeering the Liverpool fans for being disrespectful, which really is a weak excuse. Its like someone being caught speeding and claiming they were only speeding to catch up with someone else who was speeding and tell them to slow down.

I was at the game on Saturday and it was City fans who got the ball rolling although LFC fans did join in...
